How to use MCP servers in ChatGPT

ChatGPT can use MCP servers that are hosted online with a public HTTPS URL, added as a custom connector in Settings. It cannot run local servers that start with npx or uvx. Depending on your plan, custom connectors may need developer mode or an admin to allow them.

What you need

  • A remote MCP server with a URL. On this site these are marked Remote: see all remote MCP servers.
  • A ChatGPT plan and workspace that allow custom connectors.

Add it

  1. In ChatGPT open Settings, then the connectors section (called Apps and connectors in some versions).
  2. If custom connectors are hidden, turn on developer mode under advanced settings, or ask your workspace admin.
  3. Create a connector and paste the server URL.
  4. Complete the sign-in if the server asks for one.
  5. In a chat, pick the connector from the tools menu.

Local servers will not work

A server that starts on your computer cannot be reached by ChatGPT, which runs in the cloud. Use it in Claude Desktop, Claude Code, Cursor or VS Code instead.

Questions

Can I use a local MCP server with ChatGPT?

Not directly. ChatGPT only connects to servers reachable over the internet with HTTPS.
