How to create a Claude skill

Create a folder named after the skill, add a SKILL.md file with a name and a clear description at the top, then write the instructions below it. Put the folder in ~/.claude/skills/ for Claude Code. The description decides when Claude uses the skill, so say exactly when it applies.

1. The folder

~/.claude/skills/meeting-notes/
  SKILL.md
  template.md (optional)
  scripts/clean.py (optional)

2. The SKILL.md

---
name: meeting-notes
description: Use when the user shares a meeting transcript and wants notes. Produces decisions, owners and dates in our template.
---

# Meeting notes
1. Read the transcript.
2. Fill in template.md: decisions, action items with owner and date, open questions.
3. Keep it under one page.

3. Write a good description

Say when to use it and what it produces. "Helps with notes" is too vague; "Use when the user shares a meeting transcript and wants notes" is clear.

4. Test it

Ask Claude for the task in your own words and check it picks up the skill. If it does not, make the description more specific.

5. Share it

Push the folder to a public GitHub repo. This directory finds public skills automatically every week.
