How to install a Claude skill
A skill is a folder with a SKILL.md file. For Claude Code, copy the folder into ~/.claude/skills/ (all projects) or .claude/skills/ (one project) and Claude loads it automatically. In the Claude app, upload the skill as a zip file in Settings, under Capabilities.
Claude Code
Every skill page on this site has a one-line install command that clones the repo and copies the skill folder:
git clone --depth 1 https://github.com/owner/repo /tmp/repo
mkdir -p ~/.claude/skills
cp -r /tmp/repo/path/to/skill ~/.claude/skills/skill-name
Claude Code picks it up in the next session. Ask "what skills do you have?" to check.
Claude app (web and desktop)
- Zip the skill folder, with
SKILL.mdat the top of the folder. - Open Settings, Capabilities, and upload it in the skills section (menu names can change between app versions).
- Turn it on. Claude uses it when a task matches its description.
Before you install
Skills can include scripts that run on your machine. Check the skill's files and our security check on its page first.

Do skills work in ChatGPT?
Skills in the SKILL.md format are made for Claude. Some other agents read the same format, but check each tool's docs.
