Troubleshooting
Fix a ChatGPT connector that cannot connect to an MCP server
ChatGPT only connects to remote MCP servers over a public HTTPS URL. Local servers that start with npx or uvx will not work. Use a server with a hosted URL, check that your plan and workspace allow custom connectors, and complete the sign-in step if the server uses OAuth.
Why it happens
- The server only runs locally.
- The URL is wrong, not HTTPS, or not publicly reachable.
- Custom connectors are turned off for your plan or workspace.
- The OAuth sign-in was not completed.
How to fix it
- 1
Use a remote server
Pick a server marked Remote on this site. See remote MCP servers.
- 2
Check the URL
Copy the URL exactly from the server's listing. It should start with
https://. - 3
Check your workspace settings
Some plans need developer mode or an admin to allow custom connectors. Look under Settings, then Connectors.
