About citations
This skill handles citations for academic writing. It resolves each reference to a live record from Crossref, OpenAlex, arXiv or PubMed before the entry enters the bibliography. BibTeX entries are built from that resolved metadata, not from memory.
It can also audit an existing .bib file for fabricated or mismatched entries. Each entry is marked verified, corrected or unresolved, and unresolved items are listed in the report. The skill asks the assistant to read the source before citing it for a claim, and to prefer the published version over a preprint. It is for researchers and writers who are adding citations to a draft, building or repairing a .bib file, or checking a manuscript's references. It does not find literature to read; the source points to the literature-review skill for that.
Written from the project's SKILL.md and checked against it.
What citations can do
- Resolve referencesResolves each reference to a record at Crossref, OpenAlex, arXiv or PubMed before citing it.
- Build BibTeX entriesWrites BibTeX entries from resolved metadata, using @article, @misc and other entry types.
- Audit existing .bib filesChecks DOIs, titles, authors, years and venues in an existing .bib and flags problems.
- Validate .bib fileRuns scripts/validate_bib.py to report unresolved DOIs and title mismatches.
- Attach sources to claimsHelps attach the one or two sources that support a specific claim in a draft.

Try asking
- Add verified citations for the claims in this draft paragraph.
- Audit my references.bib and mark each entry verified, corrected or unresolved.
- Build a BibTeX file from these DOIs using resolved metadata.
Good to know
- Cites a paper for a finding only after its passage has been read.
- Does not find literature to read; use the literature-review skill for that.
- Unresolved items are left flagged in the report rather than guessed.

Alternatives to citations
All alternatives →Retrieves and analyzes AlphaFold predicted structures for a protein from a UniProt Accession ID. Built for researchers who need pLDDT confidence, domain boundaries, or disorder assessment.
Use when the user asks to generate daily paper digests on a general topic. This skill supports both arXiv and bioRxiv (or either one), then produces structured Chinese/English summaries for selected papers.
Tunes the CARLA Traffic Manager that drives autopilot vehicles — global and per-vehicle speed, following distance, running lights/signs, lane-change behaviour, lane offset, TM-managed lights, deterministic seed, hybrid physics, and TM sync mode. Use when the user asks to "make the traffic faster/slower", "let cars run red lights", "keep more distance", "stop lane changes", "make traffic deterministic", or otherwise change how autopilot cars behave. For manually driving one car, use control-vehicle.
Package a G6-approved mathematical-modeling paper and its exact supporting code, data, results, and figures without changing their behavior or the workspace.
Predict genome-wide functional tracks (RNA-seq, CAGE, DNase, ChIP) from DNA sequence with Borzoi. Use this skill when: (1) Scoring the regulatory effect of a variant on expression/accessibility, (2) Generating predicted coverage tracks for a locus, (3) Prioritising non-coding variants by predicted track delta.
Submits compact BindingDB REST API requests for ligand-target binding lookups by PDB ID, UniProt ID, or SMILES similarity. Built for users who want concise BindingDB summaries.
citations: common questions
Does this skill make up references?
The source says every entry must come from a record fetched at the time of use. Unresolved items are reported instead of filled with a best guess.
Which databases does it check?
It checks Crossref, OpenAlex, arXiv and PubMed. Crossref and OpenAlex are used for title search and DOI metadata, and PubMed for biomedical literature.
Can it fix an existing .bib file?
Yes. It audits each entry, writes corrections where it can, merges duplicates toward the key used in the text, and flags entries it cannot resolve.
How do I install citations?
Run the command above to copy the skill into ~/.claude/skills/. Claude Code picks it up automatically.
Is citations free?
The code is published under the Apache-2.0 licence. The service it connects to may have its own pricing.
Is citations safe to use?
It scores 88 of 100. Grades: maintenance A, licence A, quality A. Security check: grade B (allowed to use write, edit, bash without limits). Review the code before you install. How grades work.
What are alternatives to citations?
Similar skills: alphafold-database-fetch-and-analyze, daily-paper-generator, control-traffic, submission-packager.
