Troubleshooting
Fix invalid JSON in an MCP config file
One stray character makes the whole MCP config unreadable, so every server in it disappears. The usual culprits are trailing commas, single quotes, missing braces when merging two configs, and unescaped backslashes in Windows paths.
Why it happens
- A trailing comma after the last item.
- Single quotes instead of double quotes.
- Two "mcpServers" blocks after pasting a new server.
- Windows paths with single backslashes.
How to fix it
- 1
Merge into one block
There must be one
"mcpServers"object. Put each server inside it, separated by commas. - 2
Escape Windows paths
Write
C:\\Users\\youor use forward slashesC:/Users/you. - 3
Validate before saving
Paste the file into a JSON validator, or open it in VS Code, which underlines errors.
