How to add MCP servers to ChatGPT
ChatGPT can only use remote MCP servers, the ones with a URL. Local servers that run through npx or uvx do not work in ChatGPT. Hosted servers are added in ChatGPT settings as a custom connector or plugin, depending on your plan.
What works
ChatGPT connects to MCP servers over the internet, so it needs a hosted server with an HTTPS URL. On this site, remote servers are marked Remote, and their pages show the server URL.
How to add one
Hosted MCP servers are added from ChatGPT's settings as a custom connector or plugin. Where exactly depends on your plan and on developer mode settings, which OpenAI changes often, so follow the current steps in OpenAI's help center.
Local servers
If a server only runs locally, use it in Claude Code, Claude Desktop, Cursor, VS Code or Codex instead.
