OpenAI model shutdown on 23 October 2026: what to switch to

On 23 October 2026 OpenAI shuts down 11 API models: gpt-3.5-turbo, gpt-4, gpt-4-1106-preview, gpt-4-turbo, gpt-4.1-nano, gpt-4o-2024-05-13, gpt-image-1, o1, o1-pro, o3-mini and o4-mini, plus 6 fine-tuned models. Requests to these model ids stop working that day. Switch each one to the replacement OpenAI recommends, listed below, and test before the date.

This hits more than chat apps. Any script, agent, MCP server config or no-code automation that names one of these model ids will break on the day. Aliases count too: if your code calls plain gpt-4, o1 or o4-mini, those names are on the list.

How to switch

  1. 1

    Find where you use them

Search your code, .env files and app configs for every id in the table, including claude_desktop_config.json, mcp.json and the settings of any automation tool you use. Then check the usage page in your OpenAI dashboard, grouped by model, to catch calls you forgot about.

  2. 2

    Swap in the replacement

Change the model id to the one OpenAI recommends in the table. For o1-pro, OpenAI points to gpt-5.6-sol with reasoning.mode: pro.

  3. 3

    Test before the deadline

Run your real prompts against the new model. Answers, length, token use and output format can change, so check anything that parses the response, such as JSON or tool calls.

  4. 4

    Plan for fine-tuned models

The fine-tuned versions listed are removed on the same date. OpenAI names a new base model for each. Budget time to train again on that base and to re-test.

  5. 5

    Move image generation

If you use gpt-image-1, OpenAI suggests gpt-image-2.5-sunburst or gpt-image-2.5-flare. Check image size and quality settings after the switch.

Questions

Will my requests be moved to the new model automatically?

OpenAI's deprecation page does not say so. Plan for calls to these ids to fail from 23 October 2026 and change the model id yourself.

Does this affect ChatGPT?

This list covers the OpenAI API. It is about apps and tools that call these model ids directly, not the ChatGPT app.

Where do these dates come from?

From OpenAI's official deprecations page, announced on 22 April 2026. Check it before you plan a migration.
